GOVERNMENT OKAYS RS 15,000 CRORE PACKAGE TO BOOST HEALTH INFRASTRUCTURE

Health Infrastructure

• A 100 % centrally funded Covid-19 Emergency Response and Health System Preparedness Package was approved for states and UTs.

  • Objective is to strengthen national and state healthcare systems, procurement of essential medical equipment, strengthening of surveillance activities etc.

• Package will be given in three phases- January 2020 to June 2020, July 2020 to March 2021 and from April 2021 to March 2024.
• Key activities to be implemented under Phase -1 includes

  • support for development of dedicated COVI0-19 hospitals and isolation blocks
  • ICUs with ventilators, oxygen supply in hospitals and strengthening of laboratories in hospitals.
  • Hiring of additional human resources

• This fund would be divided on basis of number of positive cases and size of state and UT.
• Of the Rs 15,000 crore, Rs. 7,774 crores are sanctioned for immediate emergency response under National Health Mission (NHM) crore for immediate use till June 2020. Remaining Rs 7,226 crore would be used till 2024 for medium-term support.

  • NHM envisages achievement of universal access to equitable, affordable & quality health care services that are accountable and responsive to people’s needs.
